Thymosin Alpha 1 (Tα1, brand name Zadaxin) is a 28-amino acid peptide naturally produced by the thymus gland. It is one of the most clinically validated peptides in existence, approved in over 35 countries for the treatment of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and as an immune adjuvant for vaccines and cancer immunotherapy.
The thymus gland is central to adaptive immunity — it is where T-cells mature and learn to distinguish self from non-self. Thymosin Alpha 1 is the primary peptide secreted by the thymus that drives T-cell maturation, differentiation, and activation. As the thymus involutes (shrinks) with age, Tα1 production declines, contributing to age-related immunosenescence.
Exogenous Tα1 administration restores and enhances immune function by promoting T-cell maturation, increasing T-helper and cytotoxic T-cell activity, enhancing dendritic cell function, and modulating cytokine production. It enhances immunity without causing autoimmune-like overactivation — it is an immunomodulator, not simply an immunostimulant.
